Overview

A major cyberattack has exposed sensitive personal information from PeopleCheck – a company that carries out background checks for employers as part of the hiring process. The Everest ransomware group claims to have stolen 4.3 GB of data, including names, addresses, dates of birth and more. The attackers threatened to publish the data on the dark web if their demands were not met.

If you’ve ever had your data processed by PeopleCheck (for example, during recruitment checks), your personal details could be at risk. But, even if you have never heard of PeopleCheck, you could still be involved in this data protection failure.

This is because, when you apply for a job, the employer often uses a third-party company to carry out screening. PeopleCheck is one of those companies. Your potential employer would have passed your details to them during the hiring process.

Those affected by this breach should have received a data breach notification letter/email. If you have received this warning, you could be eligible for compensation.

We’re monitoring the case closely. Think you may have been affected?  Check your eligibility, register your interest, and we’ll let you know if a UK claim is launched.
