A new lawsuit against two huge shipping companies has begun in the UK. The claim against MOL and NYK alleges these companies overcharged British consumers for car deliveries.
More than 17 million cars and vans purchased in the UK between October 2006 and September 2015 are believed to be affected. This includes vehicles from popular brands such as:
- BMW
- Citroen
- Ford
- Mercedes-Benz
- Nissan
- Peugeot
- Renault
- Toyota
- Vauxhall
- Volkswagen
While some of the manufacturers have since sued the shipping companies for their illegal practices, UK motorists were the ones left paying the inflated price for the delivery of their vehicles.
Millions of affected drivers could now be due compensation. And, if you purchased more than one vehicle, or run a business with a fleet of vehicles, you could be due even more.
The shipping cartel price-fixing case so far
Similar claims against other shipping companies have resulted in settlements worth millions of pounds. Lawyers argue the international shipping companies colluded to fix prices, forming an illegal cartel.
In 2018, the European Commission ruled that several shipping companies had breached EU competition laws, resulting in fines totalling over €395 million (£327 million). However none of this money went to motorists – hence the following lawsuits.
So far, £40 million has already been secured through settlement agreements. Lawyers are optimistic that this latest claim, valued at around £100 million, will provide compensation for affected individuals and businesses.
