If you’ve ever felt that PlayStation games are too expensive, you’re not imagining it – and you’re not alone. Across Europe, gamers are standing up to Sony. Just like in the UK, where millions of players have joined a claim over unfair pricing, Dutch consumers are now taking action too.
What’s happening in the Netherlands?
In June 2025, the Dutch consumer group launched a major lawsuit against Sony. They believe at least 1.7 million Dutch PlayStation users have been overcharged for digital games. Why? Because Sony’s control over the PlayStation Store means players often pay much more than they should.
Research shows:
- Dutch gamers pay around 47% more for digital games than physical copies.
- Sony’s digital-only PS5 models limit choice and make gamers more dependent on the PlayStation Store.
- This is creating what the group calls a “Sony tax” on consumers and developers alike.
The first court hearing is expected later this year – and the outcome could send a powerful message across Europe.
Why this matters for UK gamers
The Netherlands isn’t alone in this fight. The UK claim against Sony was launched in 2022 and is now moving forward after Sony failed to block it in court.
Here’s what lawyers in the UK PlayStation case believe:
- Sony has an unfair monopoly on digital PlayStation games.
- It charges developers a 30% commission on every digital sale, which drives up prices for players
- This is a breach of UK competition law – and Sony should pay up to £5 billion in damages.
If successful, the UK claim could see payouts of £67 to £562 per person, depending on purchases.
You have a role to play
If you bought digital PlayStation games or in-game content between 19 August 2016 and 19 August 2022, you’re likely included in the UK claim.
It’s an opt-out claim, so you don’t need to do anything to be part of it, but registering means you’ll stay informed and won’t miss your chance to claim what you’re owed.
