Are weight loss jabs a ticking time bomb?

Demand for weight loss injections like Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic is soaring across the UK. Some GPs are calling them a “gamechanger” in the fight against obesity and type 2 diabetes. But not everyone is convinced. Pharmacists and healthcare professionals warn the growing online market for these drugs is a “ticking time bomb”, and the consequences could be serious.

So, why are experts raising the alarm?

The rise of weight loss jabs

More people than ever are turning to injections to shed pounds. For some, the results are impressive. But a lack of proper medical oversight is what worries the experts.

While the NHS does offer these treatments under strict eligibility criteria, a growing number of people are sourcing them online – often with little to no verification. Some have gone as far as faking photos or their BMI just to qualify. Others have managed to bulk-buy pens after sending minimal information.

One Shropshire pharmacist told the BBC this lack of regulation is a ticking time bomb”. These aren’t quick-fix pills; they’re potent drugs that affect the whole body. Used incorrectly, they can cause serious harm.

What the regulators say

The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) has issued a clear warning: weight loss jabs should only be accessed through legitimate, prescription-based channels. They’re intended for those who are clinically overweight or diabetic – not for cosmetic purposes.

The real risks of weight loss injections are still under review. Common side effects include nausea, constipation and diarrhoea, but hundreds of reports have flagged more severe issues, such as problems with the pancreas. And, when unregulated sellers make it easy to buy these drugs, people are left exposed. Without professional advice, and without a safety net if things go wrong.
