A new lawsuit claims Yorkshire Water hid many pollution incidents from its water and sewerage plants. This false reporting let the company charge customers more, as they were rewarded for good environmental performance by being allowed to raise household bills.

According to legal and environmental experts, Thames Water significantly underreported the number of pollution incidents which took place from its water and sewerage plants over a period of years. As a result, millions of household customers could be due compensation.

Earlier this year, Severn Trent Water was fined £2 million for ‘reckless’ pollution after a huge discharge of raw sewage at a treatment works in Stoke. In total, approximately 470 million litres of raw sewage was discharged, more than half illegally.

According to the latest reports, Northumbrian Water customers could see their bills rise by a whopping 26% over the next five years. This would see the average bill rise to £530 in 2029-30. But customers of Northumbrian Water might be able to get some money back.

Anglian Water is accused of overcharging its customers. It did this by allegedly underreporting its sewage spills and discharges. As water companies are rewarded for good environmental performance, Anglian Water was allowed to raise its prices.
